TT electronics introduces high power resistors targeting HEVs

TT electronics has introduced the WPRT Series of Wirewound Power Radial Terminal Resistors, qualified to AEC-Q200 and designed to address the specific requirements of high power applications including Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs). With the introduction of the WPRT Series, TT electronics is able to now offer the industry’s widest range of ratings and configurations.

This new resistor family is constructed from a high purity ceramic rod with force-fit end-caps, over which is wound a wire element. This is then placed within a ceramic case using fireproof insulation cement. As a result, the resistors are totally flameproof under specified temperature and overload conditions.

The design, which is believed to be unique, has been optimised for its surge performance, making it suitable for electric vehicles and motor drives. The WPRT Series also improves assembly, as it fits, perfectly, into automotive protective mouldings.

“The WPRT Series targets a specific need in the industrial, automotive and energy sectors,” explained Stephen Oxley, senior applications engineer at TT electronics. “By developing the widest range of power resistors in this class, TT electronics is demonstrating its commitment to supporting customers’ energy efficient designs whilst removing the risk, cost and complexity of developing a bespoke power resistor solution.”

The WPRT Series can be used in HEV pre-charge and BDU discharge applications, as well as protecting motors from inrush current. Its surge-protection design means it is also suitable for UPS systems.

The range comprises six power ratings; from 10W to 50W, with a maximum of 250W overload withstand for the WPRT50 (50W) range. Availability conforms to E24 standard resistor values.
