Toshiba expands TransferJet wireless technology with three ‘industry firsts’

Toshiba Electronics Europe (TEE) has unveiled three new additions to its portfolio of solutions supporting the TransferJet close proximity wireless technology transfer standard. Theses additionas include the smallest TransferJet-enabled SDIO module, the first TransferJet-enabled microSDIO card and the first TransferJet-enabled USB adaptor module which will simplify deployment of TransferJet technology for high-speed wireless transfer of large multimedia files between computers, tablets, phones and a wide variety of consumer electronics products – simply by touching two devices together.

Toshiba has combined advanced RF-CMOS LSI processes with high-frequency design and system integration to deliver high-performance, miniature TransferJet products. These technologies will provide OEMs with a path to rapidly implement TransferJet capabilities in new applications and developing accessories that add TransferJet communications to existing products.

In addition to its transceiver IC offering, Toshiba has created the TransferJet IC module, which simplifies implementation and addresses design challenges associated with compact consumer electronics products. At 4.8mm x 4.8mm x 1.0mm the SDIO IC module is delivered in what is claimed to be the industry’s smallest configuration; minimising mounting footprint in smartphones and other portable devices. The TransferJet IC module integrates the Toshiba TransferJet transceiver IC, RF components and a crystal oscillator. A software development kit is also available.

The TransferJet-enabled microSDIO card can be inserted into a variety of compact, portable products such as smartphones and tablets. The microSDIO card simplifies implementation by integrating a TransferJet transceiver IC, a TransferJet coupler, RF components and a crystal oscillator into a single part.

The TransferJet USB adaptor supports the easy addition of TransferJet communications to larger consumer electronics products including notebooks, PCs and televisions. The adaptor integrates a TransferJet transceiver IC, a TransferJet coupler, RF components and a crystal oscillator.

Toshiba’s TransferJet SDIO module begins sampling in the fourth quarter of 2012, with mass production beginning in the first quarter of 2013. The microSDIO card and the USB adaptor module will be available in the first quarter of 2013.

TransferJet is a close proximity wireless transfer technology standard promoted by the TransferJet Consortium whose membership consists of 45 companies (as of October 1st 2012), including Toshiba. It provides high-speed data transfer of up to 560Mpbs with low-power consumption simply by selecting on the screen of a device the data file to be transferred through close proximity or by touching two devices together. It was designed to facilitate the rapid transfer of large files, such as pictures or HD videos, between devices by download or streaming and can take place between two portable devices or between a portable device and a stationary PC, peripheral, or TV incorporating TransferJet technology.”
