Switching Regulator Series Extended with Introduction of 2A Range

Global power supply manufacturer Mornsun has increased the application range of its successful non-isolated Switching Regulator series with the introduction of the 2A rated K78xx-2000R3 product range.

These new switching regulators are designed to drop into the traditional 78xx series three terminal linear regulator foot-print and feature an ultra-wide input range of 6-36V DC with outputs of 3.3, 5, 9, 12 and 15V DC.

Output features include a typical voltage accuracy of ±2%, line regulation of ±0.4%, load regulation of ±0.5% (10-100% load), continuous (self-recovering) short circuit protection and low ripple & noise (typically 30mV pk-pk, 20Mhz bandwidth).

These regulators provide an input to output efficiency of up to 95% and 0.1mA ultra-low no load input current. The high efficiency means that very little heat is produced by these devices and as a result there is no requirement for a heatsink. The lack of a heatsink reduces the installation time and provides additional space around the converter when compared to traditional linear regulators. The operating temperature range of these devices is -40°C to +85°C and they are housed in a UL94 V-0 rated flame retardant and heat resistant package measuring 11.5 x 9 x 17.5mm.

This range meets the latest safety and EMC standards and has an MTBF of 2000K hours, calculated to MIL-HDBK-217F at 25°C. These, high quality, cost effective devices are suitable for a wide range of applications including POL architectures, IOT devices, industrial control systems and general electronics.

In addition to the 2A range the latest R3 series of Switching Regulators also includes devices with 0.5A and 1A outputs.

The 0.5A range feature an input range of 6.5-36V DC and outputs of 3.3, 5, 12 and 15V DC which can be configured to provide either a positive or negative voltage.

Output features include a typical voltage accuracy of ±2%, line regulation of ±0.2%, load regulation of ±0.6% (10 – 100% load), continuous (self-recovering) short circuit protection and low ripple & noise (typically 20mV pk-pk, 20Mhz bandwidth).

These regulators provide an input to output efficiency of up to 95% and no-load power consumption as low as 54mW. The high efficiency means that very little heat is produced by these devices and as a result there is no requirement for a heatsink. The lack of a heatsink reduces the installation time and provides additional space around the converter when compared to traditional linear regulators. The operating temperature range of these devices is -40°C to +85°C and they are available in 4 different mechanical formats. These include an open frame thru-hole part, an ultra-miniature thru-hole part, SMT part and a new variant that is fitted with wires. All parts, excluding the open frame device, are housed in a UL94 V-0 rated flame retardant and heat resistant package.
