Southern Electronics: The one-stop sourcing show returns to Farnborough

Southern Electronics, the UK’s longest-running electronics show, returns to FIVE, Farnborough from March 21st to 23rd 2017.


Most visitors attending Southern Electronics and the co-located Southern Manufacturing shows arrive with a combination of objectives, which often involve addressing multiple sourcing issues. For these types of visitors, the diversity of firms exhibiting is a major strength as it facilitates being able to discuss a whole range of manufacturing and design issues in just one visit. The show is divided roughly equally between Electronics and Manufacturing, and with over 800 exhibitors expected in a single venue larger than 5 halls of the NEC combined, there are plenty of conversations to be had.

Buyers from all sectors find the show worthwhile, but its location close to Farnborough airport in Hampshire makes the event especially interesting to those involved in aerospace, defence, maritime and medical technology. The South East has a highly developed Aerospace and Defence sector. 22% of the UK’s 3,400 firms operate in the area, together with the top ten US aerospace & defence and the UK’s largest space exploration company. BAE Systems headquarters is situated on the adjacent Farnborough Aerospace Centre along with Lockheed Martin and other market leaders, all are just 2 minutes walk from the show. 37% of the UK’s 24,000-strong medical technology workforce are also employed in the region, and 32% of the UK’s £3.16bn leisure and small commercial marine engineering sector was generated within 50 miles of the show.

This significant market attracts firms from far and wide; displaying a vast selection of products from components and consumables, to test equipment, assembly solutions, robotics & automation, sensors, enclosures, optical inspection, hand tools, storage and many more. An increasing number of international exhibitors has increased the range even further, with major component and CEMS from across continental Europe exhibiting in 2017.

Electronic and electrical components were a priority for nearly 50% of visitors in 2016 – the largest visitor interest group – indicating just how important the show has become as a marketplace for components and OEM parts over its two-decade history. Electronics assembly and manufacturing was also a high priority for many – over 45% of visitors arrived looking for service providers in these areas.

While electronics might be the main aim of many attendees, the huge range of other engineering specialities on show offers a welcome additional aspect to the event. Technology Trails lead attendees around show, enabling them to really make the most effective use of their time. Specialist areas such as the live demonstration Machinery Centre, make it easy for visitors to quickly track-down items of interest. A small selection of products and services on show in 2017 include CNC machine tools and machining centres, CAD/CAM tools, advanced adhesives, fasteners & joining technology, laser cutting, packaging solutions, labelling & marking, pressings, fabrications & enclosures, metrology & test equipment, coating & finishing, motors, drives and controls.

Along with the exhibition and demonstration zones, the free seminar programme is another popular feature of this show. Two programmes will run simultaneously in two theatres, dedicated to general Engineering and Electronics respectively, covering discussions on technology, innovation, business management and design as well as the most recent industrial legislation.
