The panel discussion “Safe for the Future”, once again featuring high-calibre speakers, will be making its third appearance at embedded world this year. As in previous years, the event at Exhibition Centre Nuremberg will cover all aspects of the security of embedded systems and the protection of computers and communication channels. The main thematic focus will be the protection of networked embedded systems in the Internet of Things. This time round, the key issues to be explored will include the measures that can be implemented to protect critical infrastructures, what critical infrastructures and applications are, and which measures can be adopted for supposedly non-critical applications.
“Safe for the Future” has already become established as an integral part of embedded world. We are delighted that for the third round in 2018 we will yet again be offering a discussion panel featuring renowned experts. It will certainly be exciting to once again hear what the experts have to say about the issue of security for embedded systems,” says Benedikt Weyerer, executive director embedded world at NürnbergMesse. “The key focus of the event is the protection of networked embedded systems in the Internet of Things,” Weyerer continues. The following participants have already been confirmed:
- Thomas Rosteck, division president Chip Card & Security, Infineon. Since 2016 Rosteck has headed the Embedded Security Solutions Division of Infineon Technologies AG.
- Professor Michael Waidner, director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology (SIT) in Darmstadt and Birlinghoven.
- Moderator Axel Sikora, member of the steering board for the embedded world Conference and scientific director of the Institute of Reliable Embedded Systems and Communication Electronics at the Offenburg University of Applied Sciences will ensure close thematic links between the embedded industry, the Internet of Things and the visionary framework.
Background: Brief details of the experts
Dr Thomas Rosteck, division president Chip Card & Security, Infineon. Since 2016 Rosteck has headed the Embedded Security Solutions Division of Infineon Technologies AG. He studied business management and computer science at the Technical University of Darmstadt and joined Infineon in 1998 (part of Siemens AG till 1999).
Professor Michael Waidner is the director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology (SIT) in Darmstadt and Birlinghoven. Professor Waidner obtained his doctorate in computer science at the University of Karlsruhe in 1991 and lectures at the Technical University of Darmstadt. In addition, he is the director of the Centre of Advanced Security Research Darmstadt (CASED) and head of the BMBF (German Federal Ministry for Education and Research) European Centre for Security and Privacy by Design (EC SPRIDE). Until September 2010 he was chief technology officer for security at IBM and chair of the IBM Security Architecture Board. Professor Waidner is a fellow of the IEEE and an ACM Distinguished Scientist.
Professor Axel Sikora is scientific head of the Institute for Reliable Embedded Systems and Communication Electronics at the University of Offenburg and deputy institute director and area manager Software Solutions at Hahn-Schickard Gesellschaft für Angewandte Forschung e.V. in Villingen-Schwenningen. For many years he has been working on the development, verification and integration of secure, reliable and efficient communication solutions for embedded systems.

Safety & Security Area 2018
The issues of safety and security do not just play a major role in the panel discussion and congress but are also at the heart of the trade fair action. At the special “Safety & Security Area” in Hall 4A, visitors can find out how to protect embedded systems from attack, design attack-proof hardware and software for embedded solutions and monitor attack routes in the embedded sector.
Review and perspectives – the genuine success story of embedded world
The embedded world exhibition & conference is the world’s most important trade fair and congress for embedded system technologies and for all aspects of the Internet of Things. In 2017 the event once again broke new records. More than 1,000 exhibitors presented the latest trends and developments in the embedded environment to more than 30,000 trade visitors, while approximately 1,700 delegates obtained in-depth information at the embedded world and electronic displays conferences. The prospects for 2018 are already excellent. The organisers are expecting to once again break new records and welcome more than 1,000 exhibitors to embedded world.
