Powerbox UK introduces some breakthrough products and technologies for Industry 4.0, Modern Railway & Automotive applications

Powerbox, one of Europe’s largest power supply companies and a leading force for 4 decades in optimizing power solutions for demanding applications, introduces four new power supplies designed to power Industry 4.0. As part of the Powerbox Industrial Line, the four series are based on the latest power switching technologies ; LLC, synchronous rectification, active PFC, low leakage current and energy optimization. From 80W up to 400W, the OBM33, OBM35, OBP37 and OBP38 deliver single output voltages from 12V to 48V suitable for the new generation of applications deployed in Industry 4.0 applications. The new series are designed and optimized for high performance in industrial applications.

The Powerbox Low Battery Voltage Start Unit (LBVS) – as presented at Innotrans for Modern Railway. Used to supply on-board electronics equipment when the main battery is below the minimum operating voltage, the Low Battery Voltage Start unit (LBVS) becomes a very important element of the power system, blending the knowledge of high voltage power conversion topologies, safety requirements and optimized power management.

Taking power from the traction-voltage line (700 VDC to 1500 VDC) the LBVS converts the high-voltage to an intermediate bus voltage of 110 VDC and guarantees a stable voltage from a period of 2 seconds up to 60 minutes and sustains a peak current specific to the application, making each LBVS unique to its environment. Connected to the traction-high-voltage line, the LBVS must comply with high safety isolation and has been designed with this consideration in mind.

2 new board mounted PRBX DC/DC converters to power industrial and railway applications; the extra wide input PQB50U-72S and the ultra-high power density PFB600W-110S. With an unprecedented extra wide input of 12:1 (14V to 160V) the PQB50U-72S delivers 50W in quarter brick packaging, bringing simplicity to power designers addressing EN50155 applications (one unit covering all bus voltages). In full brick packaging, the PFB600W-110S delivers industry’s first 600W unit within a 4:1 input voltage range of 43V to 160V, accommodating 72V, 96V and 110V bus voltages. Both products can be operated from -40°C up to +100°C case temperature, matching very demanding and ruggedized requirements such as in construction vehicles, mining equipment & heavy machinery process control.

A new product released within PRBX Automotive Line is the Smart DC/DC ENA200-Charger. Designed to meet new market requirements for intelligent and flexible charging solutions for automotive and industrial demanding applications, the ENA200-Charger includes the latest technologies for intelligent charging. Part of the “One package to fit all” program developed with our customers, the ENA200-Charger fits into the same IP21 packaging as the isolated DC/DC converters ENA100 and ENA200. The ENA200-Charger includes a micro-controller with very advanced firmware to guarantee optimum charging and longer battery life-time. The unit includes pre-defined charging algorithms for standard Lead Acid, Absorbed Glass Matte (AGM), Gel Cell and Calcium, though application-defined profiles can be uploaded at the Powerbox configuration center to meet customer’s specific application. The ENA200-Charger includes load temperature monitoring and intelligent spark control. The ENA200-Charger is available in two input voltages for 12V and 24V systems, delivering smart adjusted voltage for 12V batteries with up to 15A charging current and peak power up to 216W. For safety, the unit provides galvanic isolation of 500VDC (input/output/case).

The Powerbox ENA200-Charger has been designed to bring simplicity to integration. Built-in low profile IP21 polycarbonate housing, it is as small as 116 x 88 x 18mm (4.57 x 3.46 x 0.70 inches), making it one of the thinnest DC/DC chargers on the market. The integrated baseplate includes four mounting holes for mechanical attachment to a vehicle chassis or assembly plate. The low weight, less than 500 grams, contributes to excelling performance in vibration testing (5-50 Hz, acceleration ±7,35m/s2 ).

The ENA200-Charger includes over-temperature, short-circuit and reverse-voltage protection but also a well programmed spark protection function, constantly measuring the connection to the battery prior charging. By default the charger will not start charging if the voltage is below
