Pyroelectric passive infrared sensors use lenses to direct the incoming heat radiation to the sensor elements. If an object with a temperature that differs from the surroundings moves into the detection area, the sensor reacts. Of course, parameters such as the ambient temperature and the size, speed, and direction of the object influence the response time and the detection distance of the sensor.
In principle, tangential movements, i.e. movement at a 90° angle to the sensor, respectively, are easier to detect than radial movements. This means that the detection distance is smaller if the object moves towards the sensor. This is where the horizontally wide detection type comes into play. Panasonic’s new infrared sensor is equipped with an innovative, patented lens that increases the sensitivity of the sensor regarding radial movements. Not for the first time Panasonic has succeeded in setting a milestone in the development of motion sensors and their optics.
The new type complements the product families EKMCxxx and EKMBxxx with digital output (TTL/LVTTL) and with different standby currents of 1µA, 2µA, 6µA, and 170µA. This way, the sensors can be used both for cable-bound and battery-driven applications. The horizontally wide detection type has a horizontal field of view of 150° and a vertical field of view of 35° (+10°/-25°). As with the other detection types, the lenses are available in white, pearl white, and black. The low profile and the many colour variants allow users to integrate the sensors in an aesthetically pleasing way into modern buildings and facility management applications such as:
- Thermostats for needs-based heating control
- Automatic light switches for detecting whether humans are present
- IP cameras for sending status updates depending on the situation
- Infrared intrusion alarm systems for doors and windows
- Smart office applications for a cost-optimised workplace management
- Displays with motion-triggered wake-up function
We will gladly use all our knowledge and experience to help you find the best solution for your application. Based on your requirements, we recommend the most suitable PIR sensor and advise you on details such as how to make the sensor ignore certain parts of the detection area.
Thanks to the modular product portfolio, we are able to solve a large variety of applications. In addition, we are able to react quickly to changing market needs without having to go through a complete redesign process. This is especially important in today’s fast-moving world of the Internet of Things (IoT) and guarantees short development cycles and thus fast and reliable market positioning.
