Northern Manufacturing & Electronics

Northern Manufacturing & Electronics returns to Manchester’s EventCity on the 27th and 28th of September for the fifth consecutive year. As the North West’s only annual electronics event, it draws both component vendors and subcontractors to the 28,000m² venue close to Manchester city centre.

Visitor surveys in 2016 revealed that electronic and electrical components were high on the shopping list for around 40% of visitors, around a quarter of whom were from the automotive and aerospace manufacturing sectors respectively. With a huge amount of activity locally in the aerospace and defence industries, plus major presences in the area by firms such as Bentley, Leyland Trucks, Vauxhall and Jaguar Land Rover, the show is perhaps not surprisingly a great opportunity for buyers to scout out the latest components and suppliers of OEM parts.

Awaiting them this year will be an impressive line-up including sensors, enclosures, PCB’s and other electromechanical devices, plus a good selection of sub-assembly manufacturers. CIE Connectivity offers a complete ‘design-to-delivery’ solution for every imaginable type of commercial cable, moulding or loom, for both manufacture and installation applications, CIE supply many of the UK’s leading electronics and AV developers, integrators and resellers. Widen Electronics is another leading component vendor in the regional, active in a number of different verticals, including automotive aftermarket and automation. The firm supplies both standard and specialist cables of all kinds, over-moulded cable harnesses, automotive ignition leads, interconnection wiring systems and PCB cable assemblies, together with an extensive range of components. Another cabling and box-build specialist exhibiting for 2017 is Wireco. The Crewe-based firm is active in a number different sectors and specialises in rapid turnaround prototype development as well as production.

Component exhibitors include magnetics specialist MagDev and pressure sensor specialist ESI Technology. Established over 30 years ago, the firm introduced Silicon-on-Sapphire sensor technology to the industry and today provides a wide variety of solutions for applications in oil & gas, subsea, aerospace, defence, hydraulics, depth/level, hazardous area, automotive, process & industrial, test calibration and OEM markets.  Fischer Connectors showcases its high performance, push-pull circular connectors and cable assembly solutions, many of which are designed for harsh environments and demanding applications. Lemo UK also returns for 2017 with its comprehensive range of connectors.

Electronics production is another well-represented aspect of the show. Again, a wide selection of vendors will showcase a broad range of hardware including test equipment, optical inspection, hand tools, storage and stock management. Turner Electronics will introduce its new Brady Wraptor labelling system for Schleuniger cut & strip machines. The firm is one of the UK’s leading distributors of cable preparation and SMT equipment from suppliers such as Schleuniger, Z&F, WDT, Autotronik, Mechatronika, DDM Novastar, and GLW. PACE Europe will highlight its range of soldering, de-soldering and rework stations. PACE manufactures products for hand soldering applications, Advanced PCB repair, SMT rework, BGA rework, convective rework and state-of-the-art fume extraction equipment for soldering operations.

Complementing the hardware on show is an equally diverse range of production services – everything from PCB production to full contract assembly. From north of the border comes European Circuits, a contract manufacturer offering a full list of electronics services from its base in Glasgow. The firm offers complete product production, or a more tailored service such as bare PCB manufacture and PCB Assembly. Other contract electronics manufacturing services present for 2017 include assembly specialists LCL Electronics and multi-discipline service provider Trojan Electronics. First-time exhibitor Electrica is a BS EN ISO9001:2015 registered company offering electronic design, development and manufacturing services from its 12,500 sq. ft premises in Cheshire. In-house design is backed by surface mount production lines as well as through-hole and box-build capabilities, complimented by sophisticated test and inspection equipment. Regular exhibitor Datalink specialises in solutions for the oil and gas, process control and medical device industries, where safety and reliability are of paramount importance. The firm is ISO9001 and ISO13485 accredited, and is experienced with developing products for explosive atmospheres, where ATEX and IECEx standards apply. The company manufactures a range ATEX/IECEx-compliant products including ones designed for pipeline inspection and assessment, intrinsically-safe high-speed data transmission, process plant monitoring.

A unique feature of the show is that it caters for the full spectrum of engineering activity, meaning that mechanical as well as electronics production. This diversity of suppliers means that multiple production issues can be addressed in a single visit. This “one-stop-shop” characteristic of the event is one that’s consistently identified by visitors as one of its chief attractions. Another is the show’s comprehensive free technical seminar programme, giving visitors the chance of a welcome break from pounding the aisles and the opportunity to learn about the latest ideas in manufacturing and electronics from acknowledged experts in their respective fields. Topics addressed this year include the march of Industry 4.0, implementing Lean, CE marking, a look at the possibilities of 3D printing and an overview of the forthcoming General Data Protection Regulations, which all businesses would do well to familiarise themselves with. The full seminar programme together with the all-important advanced booking form is available on the show’s website,,

Entry to Northern Manufacturing & Electronics 2017 and on-site parking is free with easy access by road. EventCity is very accessible by public transport from central Manchester.
