Laser line profile sensors look to guarantee quality of IC pins and connectors

In the production of IC pins, connectors and contacts, manufacturing quality is absolutely critical. This means that all connectors and contact strips must be subjected to 100% inline inspection. Connectors that are either too short or pins that are bent can result in errors or interference with the contacts. Connectors must therefore be inspected immediately after production and any defective parts removed from the process.

For this type of inspection process, Micro-Epsilon has developed the scanCONTROL LLT2800-25 and LLT2750-25 laser profile scanner. For very small connection plug boards, the LLT2800-10 system is the preferred choice because it is able to offer much higher resolution.

During the production process, the connection plug board to be inspected is guided under the laser line of the scanner. A height profile is then generated in 3D, which is subsequently evaluated by high performance evaluation software using a standard industrial PC or laptop. Depending on the condition of the IC pins, the measurement can either be carried out directly on the top of the pins or by using ‘master plates’ that generate the precise height profile of the pins using small plungers.

Due to their high resolution and high profile frequency of up to 4,000Hz, the high speed laser line sensors of the scanCONTROL series are ideal for high speed, inline inspection tasks. The sensors work on the laser line triangulation measuring principle, operating at up to 1.2 million measurement points per second.
