Huawei has selected the TrueTouch Gen5 capacitive touchscreen controller from Cypress Semiconductor for the MediaPad X1 tablet. The new tablet employs the Gen5 TMA568 controller’s gloved finger tracking and hover support for its 7-inch touchscreen display.
The feature enables users to operate the device even while wearing thick gloves, and it automatically switches between glove and finger tracking without requiring the user to change settings. The Gen5 solution’s “hover” support enables smart touchscreen solutions that anticipate the touch of a finger and enlarge content to make it easier to find and select. Cypress collaborated with Huawei engineers on an easy-wake feature that enables users to perform a double-tap gesture to quickly activate the tablet from sleep mode.
The MediaPad X1 is claimed as being the world’s thinnest 7-inch tablet at just 7.18 mm. The tablet offers a high-resolution 1920 x 1200 LTPS display. The Gen5 also enables leading water tolerance, which combines with its robust noise immunity to deliver accurate touch input and finger tracking in environments where competing solutions experience false and missed touches.

Electronic noise from displays and after-market chargers can disrupt a touchscreen’s ability to operate properly. The TrueTouch Gen5 family’s ChargerArmor feature delivers 40 volt peak-to-peak (Vpp) charger noise immunity measured from 1 to 500 kHz with an ultra-thin 0.5-mm cover lens and a finger-size up to 22 mm.
With Cypress’s DualSense technology to execute both self-capacitance and mutual-capacitance measurements in the same device, the Gen5 family is able to offer waterproofing for performance in real-world conditions, including the presence of rain, condensation, or sweat. By combining this powerful architecture with an industry leading 32-bit ARM Cortex M-Core processor that is known for high-efficiency MIPS/mW, Gen5 controllers offer 120-Hz refresh rates and low power consumption. Gen5 controllers drive the touchscreen at 10V and at high frequency with narrow-band, single-pass scanning and advanced hardware DSP filtering.
