Cypress and IDEX in strategic partnership to develop fingerprint recognition solutions

Cypress Semiconductor is forming a new strategic partnership with IDEX ASA to develop fingerprint recognition solutions. Under the terms of the agreement, Cypress will offer its customers fingerprint solutions based on IDEX’s fingerprint imaging and recognition technology, alongside Cypress’s portfolio of TrueTouch touchscreen controllers, CapSense touch-sensing controllers and trackpad solutions.

The combination is intended to streamline the design of personal security and sleek user interfaces for smartphones, tablets, wearables, identity cards and a host of Internet of Things applications.

Security has become a must-have for Internet-connected devices that carry users’ most important personal information. IDEX has developed a unique fingerprint sensor technology that enables the controller to be separated from the capacitive sensing area, resulting in the most compact silicon combined with a flexible form factor sensor.

The patented fingerprint-sensing IP from IDEX will enable Cypress to offer high-performance fingerprint security solutions optimized for integration into mobile devices. Cypress will work with IDEX’s existing qualified sensor partners to provide customers with fast time to market and superior performance.

“With the robust fingerprint recognition IP from IDEX, and with the support and broad adoption of our extensive capacitive touch-sensing product portfolio, our new fingerprint solutions will address a broad range of mobile and Internet-connected product platforms for our customers,” said Hassane El-Khoury, Executive Vice President of the Programmable Solutions Division at Cypress. “We envision a very strong product roadmap that will meet the rapidly growing demand for personal security.”

Commenting Hemant Mardia, CEO of IDEX, said, “The quickly emerging market for wearables and the Internet of Things will also represent a significant additional opportunity for our new solutions.”
