Microsemi Corporation, a leading provider of semiconductor solutions differentiated by power, security, reliability and performance, has announced it has achieved MEF Carrier Ethernet (CE) 2.0 certification with its VSC7468 Jaguar-2 carrier Ethernet switch using the company’s CEServices software package on the Linux operating system. Microsemi’s newly certified Ethernet switch and software solution enables networking equipment solutions such as Ethernet Access Devices (EAD) that can deliver Ethernet services readily compliant to a global standard. According to market research firm IHS, worldwide EAD revenue reached close to $1 billion in 2015, up four per cent over 2014, and will hit $1.36 billion in 2020 for a 2015-2020 compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of seven per cent.

The MEF, founded in 2001 as the Metro Ethernet Forum, is a nonprofit international industry consortium dedicated to adoption of carrier Ethernet networks and services. The MEF CE 2.0 standard enables the global growth of the market and revenue opportunities by offering new services and certification standards for delivering interoperable Ethernet products and services. In addition, the certification is quickly becoming the industry standard equipment vendors must achieve in order to secure business amongst top service providers, as it delivers product and service interoperability assurance.
Microsemi’s newly certified VSC7468 Jaguar-2 is complemented by other members of the company’s latest generation carrier Ethernet switch family, including VSC7436 (Serval-2 Lite), VSC7438 (Serval-2), and VSC7464 (LynX-2). Each comes with Microsemi’s CEServices applications software package, an extensive suite of carrier Ethernet and multiprotocol label switching – transport profile (MPLS-TP) networking protocols to reduce network equipment manufacturers’ development costs and time to market. The product family is ideal for a wide variety of applications in the communications market, including carrier Ethernet, EAD/network interface devices (NID) and mobile backhaul. The EAD market is driven by carrier Ethernet connections for three main applications: backhaul from business buildings and digital subscriber line access multiplexers (DSLAMs), mobile backhaul, and wholesale carrier to carrier.
