Chomerics’ Grantham, Optical Windows facility offers concept-to-production engineering support

Following the inauguration of its cast shielded window production cell earlier this year, Chomerics Europe – a division of Parker Hannifin, has continued to invest in its Grantham, UK facility with the aim of providing Europe’s leading source of custom and bespoke optical display filter solutions.

Shielded windows are required to provide crucial EMI protection and help ensure compliance with EMC regulations in a wide range of equipment. They deliver a combination of shielding effectiveness, optical transmission and mechanical and environmental performance. Chomerics’ Grantham facility has been established for over 10 years, during that time the company has developed significant expertise in both the design and manufacture of these specialised products

By offering both cast and laminated windows in shielded and unshielded formats, Chomerics can address a diverse range of applications in the industrial, medical and military markets. The growing requirement for touchscreen operation can also be met utilising the technology and production capabilities at Grantham. In the often demanding outdoor environments in which equipment on which optical windows are used, resistive as opposed to capacitive touchscreen technologies are preferable due to the fact that they can be used with a gloved hand and are not so sensitive to user inputs.

Another relatively new requirement that Parker engineers can address when working closely with customers from the early stages of projects is the requirement to incorporate heating in the optical window solution. This is achieved by adding a special layer to the assembly and is especially important in some extreme operating condition applications.

Commenting on the continuing development of the facility in Grantham, Mark Carter, Application Engineering Team Leader, Parker Chomerics Division Europe, said: “The opening of the cast shielded window production cell with its proprietary technology earlier this year was a clear demonstration of our capabilities in optical window design, development and production. We are continuing to invest in our facility in Grantham as well as our engineering knowledge base to help us provide the best possible support and products to our customers.”
