Imec demonstrates low power beamforming transceiver chipset

Imec, in collaboration with Panasonic Corporation, has presented a 60GHz radio transceiver chipset with low power consumption, that delivers high data rates over short distances at the IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC2013). Imec was able to drastically boost the link budget of the system by introducing beamforming into the radio architecture. This multi-Gbit 60GHz chipset could pave the way toward small size, low-power, low-cost, high-data rate solutions for battery-operated consumer devices, such as smart phones and tablets.

4G mobile spectrum auction disappoints raising ‘just’ £2.34bn

Ofcom, the telecoms regulator, has announced that the auction of 4G mobile spectrum has raised £2.34bn, well below the £3.5bn pencilled in by the Treasury and the Office of Budget Responsibility who had expected it to raise upwards of £3.5bn. The auction netted far less than the £22bn that was raised thirteen years ago when 3G licenses were auctioned.
