The Southern Manufacturing and Electronics Show marks its 20th anniversary in 2018 with a move to a new permanent venue at Farnborough. The UK’s longest-running annual electronics and industrial technology show will be the first major exhibition to be held at the brand new £30m conference and exhibition centre currently taking shape at Farnborough International in Hampshire.
Designed by award-winning architects, Terence O’Rourke, the new 20,000 m² Hall 1 exhibition and conference centre is the largest exhibition venue to be built in the UK for two decades. Its prime south-east location on the site of the famous Farnborough Airshow means that it is expected to very quickly become one of the most important international showcases for UK manufacturing expertise, especially for the UK’s £20bn aerospace sector and the supply chain that supports it.
While the surroundings may be new, the Southern Manufacturing & Electronics Show will retain the same tried-and-tested formula which has carried it through two decades. Divided loosely between manufacturing and electronics, the show brings together an amazing variety of vendors, giving visitors an unrivalled opportunity to address multiple sourcing issues in a single, time-efficient visit. Component and OEM part vendors make up a sizeable proportion of the expected 800 or so firms taking part. Moreover, the list represents a far more international mix of vendors than one might expect, giving visitors to the rare chance to see products that they would not normally expect to find at a UK event.
German electronics firms have a notably strong presence at this year’s show. Among the products showcased by Cosel Europe this year is the PCA series, a compact 600W AC/DC power supply offering universal main input voltage of AC6 to 264V with output voltages varying from 5.0 to 48V. The power supply is just 1U high and 152mm long and is approved for use within medical applications. It offers constant current, parallel/redundancy operation, alarm, low noise fan and remote on/off as standard. The output voltage can be adjusted close to 0V without the need for an external circuit. Yamaichi Electronics Deutschland expands its Y-Circ® P push-pull connector series with the IP68-compliant waterproof T-series. Seen for the first time at Southern 2018, the new waterproof T-series is compatible with the Y-Circ P product family, while its miniaturised design offers several new advantages. The T-series also features a one-piece collet for error-free installation and an optimised mechanism for reliable locking. This provides for higher mating cycles and, according to the firm, due to a special pin assignment for high-speed data transmission, the interference-free transmission of signals up to 10 Gbps.
Production hardware is also well represented. Germany’s INGUN will be showing a selection of test probes and fixtures designed for the speedy and reliable testing of PCBs and other electronic assemblies. The firm offers over 20,000 possible probe variations and provides both standardised and customised solutions for every test requirement. Meanwhile, UK-based Pillarhouse International highlights its selective soldering systems ranging from low cost, flexible, standalone, benchtop, entry level systems through to advanced, high speed integrated inline production cells. At this year’s Southern Manufacturing & Electronics, the company will be exhibiting the Jade MK IV, the hand-load selective soldering system. New process features include increased board handing size, enhanced PillarCOMM interface, nozzle conditioning system and bottom-side instant IR heater.
Along with the specialist manufacturers, the show plays host to many of the UK’s largest component suppliers. Easby Electronics returns for 2018, one of the UK’s largest independent distributors of optoelectronics, interconnect, and passive and electromechanical components. Hylec-APL, the specialist supplier and manufacturer of electrical components and enclosures, is highlighting a raft of recently introduced products at Southern Electronics 2018, including a comprehensive range of UL and VDE-approved PCB terminal blocks, a new range of isolation switch boxes, its new DEDSS Stainless Steel Series of lockable, solid door enclosures and the new TeePlug® TH381 plug and socket electrical micro connector designed for underwater use and harsh environment installations.
Battery specialists DMS Technologies will be displaying a range of its small battery packs covering chemistries including NiMH, Li-Ion and LiFePO4. Also on the stand will be a new range of portable power products; rugged DC battery supplies for remote operating using both lithium and lead acid batteries. Alongside the UK built products will also be a range of distributed products including 12.8V Ultralife Lithium battery blocks. These offer a direct replacement to standard lead acid products, with an internal BMS meaning that they are compatible with lead acid charging systems.
Diamond Electronics will be showcasing a new range of IP68-rated, antimicrobial keyboards intended for use with clean industrial applications including food processing, semiconductor manufacturing, laboratories, POS systems, public area data input and clinical medical systems. The iMTC range of sealed keyboards are easy to clean and may be washed in a dishwasher. The keyboards meet medical approval EN60601-1-2 and can be supplied with an approved antimicrobial coating, nano silver or ionic silver antibacterial technology.
RDP Electronics Ltd supplies transducers and instrumentation for the measurement of displacement, force, pressure and torque. Last year the firm introduced its DCV and DCC Series of LVDT displacement transducers with user-friendly integral signal conditioning providing voltage (isolated supply) and 4 to 20mA outputs. At Southern Manufacturing & Electronics 2018 the firm will extend the range with the introduction of its E74 Series, which incorporates signal-conditioning in a compact in-line unit that is cost-effective and allows the transducer part of the system to be specified to withstand very harsh environments including high temperature and radiation.
These, of course, are just a few of the companies taking part. A full categorised list of participating firms can be found at www.industrysouth.co.uk. Visitors registering online for free tickets before the first week in January will also receive a free 12 page preview magazine to help plan their visit.
