See no evil. Hear it: Audio Analytic launches new speech detection sound profile

Audio Analytic is announcing the launch of a new security-focused sound profile: speech detection, to identify human voices in the house when no one should be in. Enabled devices can then respond intelligently through alerting consumers, or triggering a wide range of actions from connected smart home products. The home’s personal assistant could for example disturb the uninvited guest, or let the owner know that family are home.

This latest addition complements Audio Analytic’s suite of security and safety sound profiles (glass break, dog bark, smoke alarm, CO alarm and anomaly detection) to provide consumers with even greater peace of mind when it comes to unattended homes. Audio Analytic has developed a software (ai3) that enables devices to detect and recognise a range of audio events and scenes in their environment, so that the devices can respond intelligently. The compact size of Audio Analytic’s sound profiles means that consumer tech brands can deploy new features and benefits over-the-air to devices.

“A major selling point for smart home cameras is their ability to detect people but these products have limitations, such as the field of view. Our new speech detection capability enables leading tech brands to offer 360-degree coverage on their products. Intelligent sound recognition enables device manufacturers to tackle these limitations, enhance value and offer consumers the ability to always be in, even when they’re out,” said Audio Analytic founder and CEO Dr Chris Mitchell.

Audio Analytic has trained its ai3 software to delineate human speech from other sounds (not identify what is said), to ensure that customers’ products don’t indiscriminately alert users to just any noise, but offer reliable, actionable information based on real-world sounds. This is because consumers have a low tolerance for false alerts and successful products can’t afford to set expectations that they can’t live up to.

Commenting on the emergence of sound recognition as a vital technology for smart homes, Francisco Jeronimo, research director at IDC said: “Sound recognition will become an essential component of connected devices and will have a significant impact on our lives, as it enables devices to intelligently respond to sound.

IDC believes that sound recognition is a key strategic technology that should be made available in all connected devices that will use AI to offer unique experiences to their users, by providing context-awareness to their personal digital assistants.”
