ST announces ARM software support for SPEAr microprocessor families
Published:  09 February, 2011

STMicroelectronics has announced software development-tool support for its SPEAr300 and SPEAr600 family of microprocessor units (MPUs) is now available from the ARM Development Studio 5.

ST’s SPEAr (Structured Processor Enhanced Architecture) embedded microprocessors provide high levels of computing power and connectivity. Manufactured in state-of-the-art low-power HCMOS (high-speed CMOS) process technologies, the devices combine one or two advanced ARM926EJ-S processors with memory interfaces and a large set of IP blocks delivering improved connectivity, communication, security and audio/video functions for different applications when high performances are needed with low power consumption.

The ARM DS-5 features an application- and kernel-space debugger with trace, system-wide profiler / performance analyzer, real-time system simulator, and compiler. The tool suite makes it easy to develop and optimize Linux-based software stacks for ARM-powered systems, shortening development and testing cycles, and helping engineers create resource-efficient software. DS-5 is now available for the SPEAr300 and SPEAr600 product lines.

Commenting Loris Valenti, group VP and general manager, Computer Systems Division, STMicroelectronics said “The availability of the ARM Development Studio 5 will further strengthen the relationship between ST and ARM in supporting customers with the best choice of our common solutions.”

“ARM is committed to providing our Partners with the tools they need to easily and rapidly develop optimised ARM processor-based products,” said John Cornish, EVP and GM, System Design Division, ARM. “The ARM Development Studio 5 is a significant addition to our tools portfolio and has been designed specifically for developers wishing to develop Linux applications for devices such as ST’s SPEAr MPUs.”
