Lynx Software Technologies to talk about the safety and security of the next generation of automotive systems at ETAS Connections, Germany

Lynx Software Technologies will be providing valuable insights on supporting automotive ECU consolidation without compromising safety, security and real-time behaviour at ETAS Connections in Germany this week.

Robert Day, VP marketing, Lynx Software Technologies

Robert Day, VP marketing, Lynx Software Technologies will be presenting at the event and comments: “With the movement to autonomous, connected vehicles, safety and security has never been more critical. Many automotive developers are looking to use complex multi-core processors as domain controllers and vehicle computers to help cope with the huge increase in software content and connectivity.  I’m very much looking forward to detailing a new foundational software technology to support this, and open a discussion on safety and security issues.”

The presentation will tackle migration of software systems from microcontrollers to microprocessors, with multiple systems running on a single system on chip (SoC), without compromising safety, security and real-time properties that are required for safety-critical automotive systems. The key technology based on a separation kernel architecture was designed to offer multiple secure isolated domains running on a single microprocessor or SoC. These autonomous runtime domains cannot see or compromise software running in the other domains, which protects critical software safety functions either from fault conditions or malicious threats, even though they are running on the same processor. Each domain can host either virtualised guest operating systems or bare-metal applications, allowing developers to carefully configure and host the right real-time environment for each application.

Lynx and ETAS announced they were working together in March 2017 at the Embedded World conference in Nuremberg.  ETAS add the LynxSecure Separation Kernel to its automotive software stack, for increased ECU and vehicle computer security in the automotive market. In addition, ETAS is supporting LynxSecure with a version of the RTA-BSW AUTOSAR solution, the RTA-VRTE AUTOSAR Adaptive platform and the ESCRYPT embedded security solution to run within the lightweight isolated virtual machine containers of LynxSecure. This combination forms a complete platform designed to address real-time automotive use-cases which demand the highest level of safety and security.

The LynxSecure Separation Kernel allows the powerful microprocessor-based hardware to be partitioned and isolated into different virtual machines allowing software applications to co-exist while providing freedom from interference. The LynxSecure Separation Kernel technology also offers the unique LynxSecure Application virtual machine containers. These bare-metal virtual machines are highly efficient allowing application code to run directly on the microprocessor without the need for a guest operating system.

ETAS Connections 2017 will take place on 27th and 28th November at Legendenhalle Motorworld, Böblingen, Germany. This year’s event will cover all things automotive including cyber security, ADAS, Virtualisation and more. Other guest speakers will be present from Swiss Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence IDSIA (USI & SUPSI), the University of Kempten, Autoliv, AVL, BMW, Bosch, Daimler, Hyundai Korea, John Deere, Knorr-Bremse, Kugler Maag CIE, Mahle UK, MTU, Toyota Europe, Volkswagen, Volvo, and ETAS.
